Christ Our Victor

Jan 25, 2026    Keith Thomas

Summary: The sermon explored how Jesus rewrote the failed chapters of human history by succeeding where both Adam and Israel had fallen. In the wilderness, Christ faced Satan's temptations for 40 days, mirroring Israel's 40 years of testing in the desert. Unlike our forefathers who repeatedly failed to trust God's provision and protection, Jesus resisted every temptation by relying on God's Word and trusting His Father's plan. This victory wasn't just for Christ's sake—it was accomplished as our representative, our substitute, securing righteousness for all who trust in Him. Because of Christ's obedience, we now stand before God with His perfect record, and we have the power through the Holy Spirit to resist temptation as Jesus did.

Takeaways:

Marvel at Christ our Substitute: The most important application is simply to stand in awe of what Jesus has done for us. He kept the covenant we couldn't keep, obeyed perfectly when we fail, and defeated the enemy we couldn't overcome. Our primary response should be worship and setting all our hope on Christ alone as our strong and perfect plea before God's throne.

We Stand in a New Relationship to Satan: Because we are united to Christ, God is crushing Satan under our feet (Romans 16:20). We are being shaped more and more into Christ's likeness—the conqueror. This means we can resist temptation by fleeing to Christ, leaning into God's truth rather than the lie, and even quoting Scripture back to the enemy in our battles.

Humility and Christ-Reliance in Our Desert Journey: Like Israel journeying to the Promised Land, we are traveling through the wilderness toward our heavenly home. The warning to "let anyone who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall" calls us to humble dependence on Christ rather than self-reliance. Fight temptation as Jesus did—through God's Word and complete trust in the Father—remembering that all new life flows from Christ's victory on our behalf.

For us: As we walk through our own wilderness seasons this week, may we remember that we have a great High Priest who was tempted in every way yet remained without sin. Let us rest fully in His finished work, resist the enemy with the truth of God's Word, and worship Jesus our Victor who crushed Satan's head and now shares that victory with us.
